Fake security software targets Mac users

The killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osma Bin Laden has led to widespread spam and search engine poisoning. Fake security software are being distributed by scammers in context of this news which is drawing a huge attention world wide. A new scareware has been detected for MAC OS. The program named “MAC defender” once installed, claims a personal computer is heavily infected with malware. It nags users with pervasive pop-ups and fake alerts until they fork over a fee to purchase the full version, a fake one.

Till date, rogue software have targeted only Windows based operating system. This new scareware for MAC is quite alarming and indicates that the safe days of MAC users are gone! Kurt Baumgartner, a senior malware researcher at Kaspersky Lab, had done a detailed analysis on this. Last month, Mr Baumgartner had reported that “.co.cc” domains which are often used to spread malware and host attack code-infected Web sites  had begun to host fake security sites and deliver the “Best AntiVirus 2011″ rogueware. The program currently is taking advantage of the Bin Laden news , spreading through poisoned search engine result, a famous black hat SEO technique. Users must have a trusted anti-virus installed and updated. We’ll keep an eye on this topic. Stay tuned :)
